Roller Derby has gone through many revolutions and revivals. Modern day roller derby is an all-female, full-contact sport on quad skates, with the brutality of rugby and the grace of gymnastics.
The hits are real! They are not staged or planned, and they DO hurt.
A Roller Derby bout lasts for 1 hour, with two 30 minute halves. The game is divided into jams which can each last up to 2 minutes. In each jam 4 blockers and 1 jammer for each team compete for points on the oval track. On the first whistle the blockers start. Blockers are both offensive and defensive players at the same time, their goal is to help their jammer through the pack, as well as to impede the other jammer through a series of well timed hits and getting in the way. The pivot is a special blocker who is in charge of the pack and has a striped helmet cover. On the second whistles the jammers (the point scorers) start. The jammers have a star on their helmet cover and have to weave their way through the pack, lap around the track, and attempt to make it through the pack again. The first jammer to successfully pass through the pack without committing any fouls is named lead jammer, and can call of the jam strategically at any time by repeatedly touching their hips with their hands. The jammers score 1 point for each opposing blocker they pass legally starting on their second time through the pack each jam. At the end of the bout, the team with the most points wins.
